Today we are featuring Femi Lewis, from the borough of the Bronx in New York City. Femi is a Content Marketing Strategist that supports Service-Based Entrepreneurs and Non-profits. In this series, we highlight members of the BlackPress Slack channel who are doing amazing things with WordPress.
What do you do? What are you passionate about?
I’m super passionate about entrepreneurship and storytelling. I believe that business ownership presents a great opportunity to share successes, challenges and learning experiences in so many ways.
Storytelling can take shape in so many ways–blogs, emails, social media and even traditional journalism. The choice truly is up to the creator!
How do you describe yourself professionally.
I’m a business journalist and content creator–I write about entrepreneurship and economic development for digital platforms. I also support service-based entrepreneurs as a content strategist by developing the right messages at the right time to the right audience.
How and when did you get started with WordPress?
I developed a website for my first business through WordPress. I remember reading about WordPress and its capabilities. I attended my first WordCamp in 2019 in New York. I truly loved the community as there was a culture steeped in learning and support–it’s a nerd’s greatest dream come true. In 2023, I was asked to speak at three WordCamps–Pheonix, Montclair and US about the content creation process.
How do you use WordPress?
Currently, I use WordPress to support my clients in publishing content.
How has the WordPress software or community helped you to grow or helped you accomplish a goal?
The WordPress community has helped me in so many ways. First, attending WordCamp NYC in 2019 allowed me to see myself as more than a content creator but as a workshop facilitator who could really share great resources with others. Plus spaces like BlackPress are actively helping people of African descent amplify their voices and share their expertise in the techworld.
What is something you’d like to do or build with WordPress in the future?
I’m going to build a digital platform focused on Black women and entrepreneurship.
When you were little, what did you want to do when you grew up? Do you still want to do that?
I’ve been a writer since I would write! That’s all I ever wanted to do in my life–nothing else (with the exception of being a good wife and mother!) has ever sustained me.
What do you like to cook for other people?
My mac n cheese and banana pudding are both experiences.
